Hon. Judge Arnold Kirekiano of the High Court of Tanzania began his legal journey in 2002 when he joined the Institute of Judicial Administration Lushoto (IJA) at Diploma level. His initial intention was to join Mzumbe University, however he faced challenges in securing government sponsorship. But a golden opportunity arose when the Judiciary of Tanzania offered sponsorships for students to pursue studies at IJA. Seizing this chance, he enrolled with the Judiciary’s support.
Reflecting on his time at IJA, Hon. Judge Kirekiano recalls the institute's unique environment, particularly its focus on discipline and commitment to studies.
“The discipline and the way lecturers taught at IJA motivated many students to dedicate themselves fully to their studies,” he explains. He also narrates that extracurricular activities such as physical exercises where they were running to Soni area in Lushoto became a part and parcel of their routine.
Leadership Roles at IJA
During his time at IJA, the judge demonstrated early leadership potential, serving as the spokesperson for the IJA Student Organization (IJASO). This role played a significant part in his professional development, preparing him for leadership positions he would take on in the judiciary in the years to come.
“Serving as the IJASO spokesperson gave me a platform to build my leadership skills, which later helped me in executing my responsibilities in various leadership roles,” he says.
Advancing in Legal Education and the Judiciary
In 2005, he was officially employed by the Judiciary of Tanzania. Despite the demanding nature of his work, he continued to pursue his studies and completed his Law Degree at the Open University of Tanzania in 2008. He then joined the Law School of Tanzania (LST) in 2009, successfully completing his studies in 2010.
Reflecting on his education at IJA, Hon. Judge Kirekiano acknowledges how the training and the environment laid a solid foundation for his legal studies and professional development.
“The discipline and foundation we received at IJA were critical in shaping the way I now execute my duties as a judge,” he notes.
Serving the Judiciary for Over 20 Years
With nearly 20 years of service in the judiciary, the judge has served in various capacities, starting from the Primary Court at Ngorongoro as Magistrate, the Resident Magistrate Court in Arusha, and later at Korogwe.
From 2015 to 2018, he was the Resident Magistrate in-charge in Hai District Court, and from 2018 to 2019, he served in the same post at Dodoma Resident magistrate Court.
His unwavering commitment, hardworking and professionalism eventually led to his elevation as the Deputy Registrar of the High Court of Tanzania, where he helped establish new High Court zones in Kigoma and Morogoro. Later on he was appointed to the post of Senior Deputy Registrar of the High Court of Tanzania.
In recognition of his exemplary service, last year on September 03, 2023, he was appointed as a High Court Judge of Tanzania, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Reflections on the Role of IJA
Hon. Judge Kirekianoe credits IJA for providing him with the foundation needed to succeed. “IJA gave me the foundation to pursue my law degree with ease while already employed. The discipline we acquired at IJA is the bedrock of how we now carry out our duties,” he says.
He also speaks highly of the leadership at IJA, emphasizing the quality education and discipline that the institute instills in its students.
“IJA is an institute that has offered numerous opportunities to graduates and students alike. It is well-managed, with a focus on discipline and academic excellence, and I encourage citizens to join the Institute for their bright future,” he urges.
The judge emphasizes the role IJA plays in producing competent and marketable legal professionals. “The institute is centered on excellence, which is crucial in today’s world, where quality is a key,” he explains.
Also, Hon. Judge Kirekiano says that the brotherhood at IJA during their time is among the major catalysts for their performance in his various positions he held including that of High Court Judge.
“We lived like one family, supporting each other in both academic and social matters, which greatly strengthened us in our duties as judges,” he reflects.
The Importance of Alumni platform
Speaking on the importance of IJA alumni platform, the judge notes how it fosters unity and support among former IJA students. “The IJA alumni platform helps bring people together, while also fostering encouragement and mutual support in various aspects. We, the 2004 class, have maintained our bond,” he shares.
Hon. Judge Kirekiano remembers some of his colleagues at IJA including High Court Judge in Mtwara zone, Hon. Said Dingoi, High Court Judge in Dar es Salaam zone, Hon. Gladys Barth, Ms. Rose Jally a lecturer at IJA.
Advice for Aspiring IJA Legal Professionals
The judge’s parting shot was of wisdom and encouragement for current and IJA students: “The key is to be dedicated and to focus on your studies. Success in this field requires professionalism, discipline, and integrity in everything you do.”
He also stresses that success takes time, sharing his own journey of 20 years in the judiciary before being appointed a High Court Judge. “It takes time. It’s been 20 years since I started working, and only now have I reached the position of Judge,” he says, reminding students to be patient and resilient in their careers.
